World Patent

A World Patent is the idea of a patent that that provides protection for an invention in every nation globally. This requires international cooperation on a level that has not yet been achieved and all applications must be made in the separate patent offices of each nation.

International Patent

An International Patent is the same as a World Patent, just a different term. They do not exist as all patent applications must be made in the patent office of each relevant nation.

PCT Application

A PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) application is for those who wish their patent to be effective in up to 117 that are member nations. A PCT application does NOT result in an International Patent, as they do not exist, instead the patent is accepted by member nations who agreed not to discriminate against foreign patent applications.
